When to use the 60-item version
The 60-item form covers the same six HEXACO domains as the full 240-item inventory and samples all four facets of each domain — just at lower density. Each domain is measured by 10 items rather than 40, which reduces reliability compared to the full form but keeps administration under 15 minutes. The trade-off is worth it in several situations:
- Survey batteries. Research studies that already include other measures benefit from the shorter form to reduce participant fatigue without dropping HEXACO coverage entirely.
- Screening contexts. When a broad domain profile is enough and fine-grained facet distinctions are not required, the 60-item form provides adequate precision.
- Self-exploration. Individuals who want a quick read on their HEXACO profile before committing to the longer inventory.
If facet-level scores are important — or if you need the highest possible score reliability for individual assessment — the 240-item IPIP-HEXACO is the better choice. It reports 24 narrow facets with population percentiles from a published normative sample.

A profile across all six HEXACO domains. Each domain score is reported as a percent-of-maximum alongside a non-diagnostic narrative band (Higher, Average, or Lower) for orientation. Because no published normative sample exists for this exact 10-item-per-domain configuration, scores are expressed as percent-of-maximum rather than population percentiles. For percentile scores referenced against a published normative sample, see the 240-item version.
