How Qualia and the other artificial intelligence (AI) features work
Qualia is the AI assistant on Implicitify. What it can do depends on who is using it: everyone can use it as a site guide, and signed-in researchers and clinicians get a fuller research version. Your test scores always come from fixed scoring rules, never from AI. Here is a short walkthrough of each feature.
Qualia site guide (for everyone)
Look for the “Ask Qualia” button in the corner of the home page, the assessment catalog and help pages. You don’t need an account.
- Tap “Ask Qualia” to open the chat.
- Ask something like “Is there a test about how I handle stress?” or “What does working memory mean?”
- Qualia points you to tests in the catalog and answers questions about starting a test, accounts and downloading your report. For prices, it sends you to the catalog, where current prices are always shown.
The guide can’t look at or explain anyone’s scores or results, and it never suggests a diagnosis. If you paste a score, the message isn’t sent. Your report explains your own results, and a licensed professional can talk them through with you.
Ask Qualia (for researchers and clinicians)
When you’re signed in as a researcher or clinician, the same corner button opens Ask Qualia, a study-planning helper on research pages.
- Open it from the corner button, or go to the full page from the Research Hub.
- Ask about research design, statistical power, effect sizes or which measures fit what you want to study.
- Check its answers before you rely on them. It can be wrong and it doesn’t replace review by an institutional review board (IRB).
Qualia workspace (for researchers and clinicians)
The workspace puts the Qualia chat and the research calculators on one page. Open it from the Research Hub.
- Describe your study or ask a question in the chat on the left.
- Use “Draft new practice items” to have Qualia write new, original items for a construct you define, ready for you to pilot.
- Work through numbers in the calculators alongside the chat.
Research calculators
The calculators don’t use AI. They work out effect sizes from two groups, convert between Cohen’s d, correlations and odds ratios, estimate sample size and power, project reliability for a longer test with the standard error of measurement, calculate Cronbach’s alpha from item data, and describe or correlate pasted columns of numbers.
- Open a calculator card and enter your numbers.
- Press Calculate. The result appears above the cards with a short note on its assumptions.
- Paste only practice or de-identified data. Nothing you enter is saved.
Setting up a study with Qualia
After you describe a study in the workspace chat, Qualia asks, “Want me to set this up in Study Designer?”
- Choose “No, keep chatting” to carry on, or “Yes, set it up” to continue.
- On Yes, Qualia matches your description to measures in the catalog and to the Study Designer fields, then shows you a summary to review.
- Press “Open in Study Designer” to check every step and change anything. You publish the study yourself, which gives you the usual share link and de-identified spreadsheet export on the Studies page.
Qualia only sees what you typed in the chat. It never sees participant data, and it never publishes a study or creates a share link on its own.
Written Portrait reflection (optional, for your own reports)
On your reports page you can choose to add a short written reflection to your Portrait. It is off unless you turn it on.
- Open your reports and choose the option to add a written reflection.
- Read the explanation of exactly what is shared. Only already-calculated summary figures go to the AI, with no name, dates or written answers.
- Choose whether to generate it. Your scores stay exactly the same either way.
Meehl’s Ghost
Meehl’s Ghost is a conversation partner grounded in the published ideas of the psychologist Paul Meehl, such as clinical versus statistical prediction and construct validity. It’s a learning tool, not advice. Try it at Meehl’s Ghost.
What the AI never does
- It never scores your tests. Scores always come from fixed scoring rules.
- The site guide never interprets anyone’s scores or results and never suggests a diagnosis.
- The chats never receive your test answers, results or account details, only the words you type into the chat.
- Please don’t type names, contact details or health information. Messages that look like they include contact details aren’t sent.
- Chats are deleted after 7 days.
- AI answers can be wrong. Treat them as a starting point and check anything important.
