IPIP BIS/BAS behavioral inhibition and activation scales

IPIP BIS/BAS uses 36 International Personality Item Pool statements to assess Anxiety (BIS), Fun-seeking (BAS), Drive (BAS), and Reward Responsiveness (BAS). Respondents complete 36 items using 1–5 ratings. Keyed responses are summed separately for each reported scale.

What it measures

This 36-item public-domain inventory measures the temperament dimensions of Gray's reinforcement sensitivity model: the Behavioral Inhibition System (sensitivity to threat and punishment, experienced as anxiety) and three Behavioral Activation System dimensions — Drive, Fun-seeking, and Reward Responsiveness. The construct family follows Carver and White's (1994) BIS/BAS scales; the items administered here are the public-domain IPIP representations of those constructs, not the copyrighted originals.

Each subscale is scored separately — the model treats inhibition and activation as independent systems, so there is no combined total. Reference values from the Eugene–Springfield Community Sample appear in the norms section.

Psychometric properties

The notes below are reproduced from the platform's psychometrics register for this instrument — the same source-cited reliability, validity, and norms text that accompanies its downloadable report.

The IPIP BIS/BAS item pool (Goldberg et al., 2006) operationalizes Carver and White's (1994) behavioural inhibition and activation constructs using public-domain items. Internal-consistency coefficients were computed directly on the exact items and reverse-keys administered here from the English-language Eugene-Springfield Community Sample (ESCS; Goldberg, Harvard Dataverse): Cronbach's alpha = 0.84 (Anxiety/BIS), 0.78 (Drive/BAS) and 0.67 (Reward Responsiveness/BAS). Because reliability is available for these three subscales, their percentiles are shown with a SEM-based 90% confidence range. Fun-seeking is not normed (see below), so no coefficient is asserted for it.

The four-subscale structure — Behavioural Inhibition (BIS) and the three Behavioural Activation components Drive, Fun-seeking and Reward Responsiveness — follows Carver and White's (1994) original BIS/BAS model, which the IPIP item pool was written to represent (Goldberg et al., 2006). Anxiety (BIS), Drive (BAS) and Reward Responsiveness (BAS) carry population percentiles here; Fun-seeking is scored as percent-of-maximum because one of its administered items has no verbatim match in the reference dataset, so the subscale is not fully covered and is not normed.

Percentiles for Anxiety (BIS), Drive (BAS) and Reward Responsiveness (BAS) are derived from the English-language Eugene-Springfield Community Sample (ESCS; Goldberg, Harvard Dataverse doi:10.7910/DVN/UF52WY), an adult community panel. Mean, standard deviation, reference N and Cronbach's alpha were computed directly from the raw IPIP item-level responses on this scale's exact item set and reverse-keying (complete cases): Anxiety (BIS) M = 26.88, SD = 7.55, N = 476; Drive (BAS) M = 28.52, SD = 6.31, N = 490; Reward Responsiveness (BAS) M = 20.27, SD = 3.77, N = 575. The ESCS is a community sample and is not nationally representative. Fun-seeking is not normed (one administered item has no verbatim ESCS match, so the subscale is not fully covered).

Scoring & interpretation

Item responses are summed within each scale (reverse-keyed items recoded first) and expressed as a population percentile against the cited reference sample, with a reliability-based confidence range where α is published.

This is a community sample and is NOT nationally representative. The mean, standard deviation, reference N and Cronbach’s α were computed directly from the raw IPIP item-level responses on THIS scale’s exact item set and reverse-keying (complete cases); reference N varies by scale and is shown with each scale below. The confidence range uses the standard error of measurement (SEM = SD·√(1−α)) from that computed α.
