Know What They See — Before They Do
Implicit Motivation Assessment for Selection, Admissions, and Promotion
The key to successful admissions, selection, hiring, and promotion: understand what evaluators see that you don’t. Implicit motivation assessment using integrative PSE methodology with automated lexical content analysis.
The Four Implicit Motivation Profiles
Open Achiever
High achievement motivation, low defensive closure
Believes effort leads to success. Pursues goals with energy and optimism. Implicit narrative conveys genuine engagement with excellence standards rather than fear of failure.
Blocked Achiever
High achievement motivation, high avoidance
Wants mastery but feels blocked. May push harder or withdraw when frustrated. Implicit narrative reveals achievement preoccupation alongside affiliation or power conflict.
Secure Affiliate
High affiliation motivation, low anxiety
Confident in relationships. Values connection and feels supported. Implicit narrative conveys genuine positive relational expectations without anxious preoccupation.
Anxious Affiliate
High affiliation motivation, high anxiety
Anticipates rejection. May become defensive or withdraw from connection when threatened. Implicit narrative reveals relational preoccupation with negative relational expectancy.
The PSE Method
The Picture Story Exercise (PSE) uses ambiguous pictorial stimuli to elicit brief narratives. Because the stimuli are ambiguous, participants project their own motivational concerns onto the stories they tell. A deterministic lexical content-analysis engine — an automated approximation of trained-scorer motive imagery coding, in the McClelland/Winter tradition — identifies achievement, affiliation, and power motivational themes. The same stories always yield the same result; there is no AI or probabilistic inference.
This implicit assessment approach captures what standard interviews and resumes cannot: the motivational substrate that drives behavior across contexts. Research consistently shows that implicit motives predict behavioral outcomes over 6–12 month periods, while explicit self-report measures predict immediate behavioral preferences.
Applications
Graduate Admissions
Identify applicants with genuine achievement motivation vs. avoidance-driven performance. The PSE predicts persistence through rigorous training programs better than GPA or test scores alone.
Hiring & Promotion
Match implicit motivation profiles to role demands. Leadership roles require balanced power and affiliation; individual contributor roles reward achievement motivation without power drive.
Personal Development
Understand the motivational substrate driving your career choices. Align explicit goals with implicit drives to reduce the friction of sustained effortful performance.
