Big-Five Factor Markers (100)
Big-Five 100 uses 100 International Personality Item Pool statements to assess Extraversion, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, Intellect/Imagination, and Agreeableness. Respondents complete 100 items using 1–5 ratings. Keyed responses are summed separately for each reported scale.

What it measures
This collection administers Goldberg's five 20-item IPIP Big-Five domain scales — 100 public-domain items covering Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, and Intellect/Imagination at greater length, and therefore greater per-domain reliability, than the short-form Big Five inventories in the catalog.
Origins and lineage
The Big Five grew out of the lexical hypothesis — the premise that the individual differences people find most important are encoded in everyday language. Allport and Odbert (1936) catalogued thousands of person-descriptive terms from an unabridged English dictionary; Cattell (1943) reduced that lexicon to a set of rating variables compact enough to factor. When Tupes and Christal analyzed ratings built on Cattell's variables across eight samples, five factors kept recurring — a 1961 Air Force technical report so influential that the Journal of Personality reprinted it three decades later (Tupes & Christal, 1992) — and Norman's (1963) replication fixed the five-factor description as the field's reference point.
Goldberg's program turned the taxonomy into public measurement: his large adjective analyses established the robustness of the structure he dubbed the 'Big-Five' (Goldberg, 1990), his marker sets standardized it for research use (Goldberg, 1992), and the International Personality Item Pool (Goldberg, 1999) moved the enterprise into the public domain so that any researcher could administer, inspect, and improve the scales without license barriers.
The IPIP representation administered here
The five 20-item domain scales here are original IPIP items in Goldberg's own lexical marker tradition, not a repackaging of any proprietary questionnaire; for the Big Five there is no single commercial 'original' to imitate, and these public-domain scales are themselves reference instruments. Scale membership and reverse-keying are taken verbatim from Goldberg's IPIP multi-scale map (the ScalesFor967items table), with construct names as catalogued at ipip.ori.org.
Each domain is scored in its keyed direction and reported against the Eugene–Springfield Community Sample reference values shown in the norms section. Scores describe broad, normal-range dispositions — not abilities, and not diagnoses.

Scoring & interpretation
Item responses are summed within each scale (reverse-keyed items recoded first) and expressed as a population percentile against the cited reference sample, with a reliability-based confidence range where α is published.

Norms computed from the Eugene-Springfield Community Sample (ESCS) — Lewis R. Goldberg’s adult community panel from Eugene and Springfield, Oregon (Harvard Dataverse, doi:10.7910/DVN/UF52WY). This is a community sample and is NOT nationally representative. The mean, standard deviation, reference N and Cronbach’s α were computed directly from the raw IPIP item-level responses on THIS scale’s exact item set and reverse-keying (complete cases); reference N varies by scale and is shown with each scale below. The confidence range uses the standard error of measurement (SEM = SD·√(1−α)) from that computed α.
