Work-Relevant Personality Scales

Work-Relevant uses 130 International Personality Item Pool statements to assess 13 named scales. Respondents complete 130 items using 1–5 ratings. Keyed responses are summed separately for each reported scale.

What it measures

This 130-item research collection measures 13 work-relevant personality constructs keyed to the scales of the Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI; Hogan & Hogan, 1992): seven primary dimensions carried here under the HPI's scale names — Adjustment, Ambition, Sociability, Likeability, Prudence, Intellectance, and School Success — plus six occupational composites such as Service Orientation, Managerial Potential, and Stress Tolerance.

Origins and lineage

The HPI grew out of Robert Hogan's socioanalytic theory (Hogan, 1983), which grounds personality in two universal agendas of group life — getting along with other people and getting ahead of them — and distinguishes identity, the actor's own story, from reputation, the story others tell. On this view a personality inventory forecasts reputation: how a person will characteristically be described by those who work and live with them.

Built by Robert and Joyce Hogan expressly for the world of work, the HPI (Hogan & Hogan, 1992) organized its seven primary scales around those agendas and added criterion-focused occupational composites for selection research. The IPIP's work-relevant collection preserves that two-layer design, including older HPI scale names — Likeability, Intellectance, School Success — as catalogued in Goldberg's map.

The public-domain scales here are original IPIP items keyed to constructs similar to the HPI's scales; scores here are not scores on the Hogan Personality Inventory itself, and published HPI validity evidence does not transfer to this form. Scale membership and reverse-keying are taken verbatim from Goldberg's IPIP multi-scale map (ScalesFor967items), with construct names as catalogued at ipip.ori.org.

Each construct is reported against Eugene–Springfield Community Sample reference values in the norms section. It is a research profile for self-insight, not a validated selection battery, and no hiring decisions should rest on it.

Scoring & interpretation

Item responses are summed within each scale (reverse-keyed items recoded first) and expressed as a population percentile against the cited reference sample, with a reliability-based confidence range where α is published.

Norms computed from the Eugene-Springfield Community Sample (ESCS) — Lewis R. Goldberg’s adult community panel from Eugene and Springfield, Oregon (Harvard Dataverse, doi:10.7910/DVN/UF52WY). This is a community sample and is NOT nationally representative. The mean, standard deviation, reference N and Cronbach’s α were computed directly from the raw IPIP item-level responses on THIS scale’s exact item set and reverse-keying (complete cases); reference N varies by scale and is shown with each scale below. The confidence range uses the standard error of measurement (SEM = SD·√(1−α)) from that computed α.
